Choosing A Background

Plain white is best, avoid background distractions such as animals, people, vehicles, bright coloured objects, etc.

Virtual LEX Icons

The PDF version of the Virtual LEX Icon must be included in all entries with exceptions to photography classes and computer generated entries. This icon should be printed and cut out to appear in the lower left corner of the photo and must not obstruct the view of the entry being judged. This version of the icon is available for download in the Junior Arts, Homecraft and Horticulture prize books.

”Baking”

COOKIES:

Good:

– Centre of photo, focused
– Cookie greater than 3/4 of frame view
– Minimal shadowing, bright
– No background distractions, plain white background
– Complete design visible

Bad:

– Low lighting
-Background distractions, non white background
– Multiple cookies, unfocused and blurry
– Entry does not occupy more than 1/2 of frame in view

CAKES:

Good:

  • Complete Design visible in frame, cake>1/2 the frame
  • Minimal shadowing, bright picture
  • Plain background, no distractions

Bad:

  • Some of design is cropped out, low visibility in lighting
  • Low light, shadows
  • Background distractions, unfocused

PIES:

Good

  • Plain white background
  • Entire pie top with design is visible
  • Pie greater than ½ frame of view, centered and focused
  • Minimal shadowing

Bad

  • Distracting background, uneven focus
  • Pie is not flat; angle does not showcase entire top with design evenly

3D classes

WOODWORKING:

Good

  • White background, no distractions
  • 3/4 angle, able to see full scope of work

 

Bad

  • Unfocused
  • Not ideal camera angle to see full creation

 

 

ORNAMENTS:

Good:

  • Plain, no background distractions
  • Pictured in intended display method

Bad;

  • Low lighting
  • Not pictured in intended display method

BIRD HOUSES:

Good:

  • Close photo, detail can be seen
  • Multiple photos may be required to see detail

Bad:

  • Avoid dark, shadowy photos
  • Avoid distance photos

LEGO CREATIONS:

Good:

  • Focused, bright photo
  • Do not use Kits!
  • Multiple angles may be required to show creativity

Bad:

  • Dark
  • Unfocused
  • Shadowy photos

SCULPTURES:

Good:

  • Focused
  • Plain background
  • Close proximity allows details to be seen

Bad:

  • Difficult to see
  • Too much space between camera and object
  • Distracting, bright background 

STAINED GLASS:

Good:

  • Clear 
  • Focused picture
  • No background distractions

Bad:

  • Background distractions
  • Uneven lighting
  • Creations should be hung

DIORAMA’S

Good:

  • Multiple angles may be required
  • Details visible
  • Bright image, minimal shadowing

Bad:

  • Dark
  • Unclear, unfocused
  • Details can’t be seen

Stitches (Quilting, Sewing, ETC.)

HANDIWORK

Good

  • Even lighting
  • Highly focused images are required
  • Include one close up image showing the detail of the article
  • Article should be lying flat with no wrinkles

Bad

  • Shadows over entry

 

 

 

CROCHETING, KNITTING, SEWING

Good

  • Require overall front view, overall rear view, interior and detailed pictures
  • May be pictured on mannequin or lying flat
  • Neutral background to allow item to be focus

Bad

  • Do not photograph items while holding them as hands in a picture obstruct the view of the article

 

 

 

 

 

 

QUILTS

  • Require overall image of quilt to showcase the design
  • Photos of corners should be taken with a ruler in view
  • Photos need to be well focused to see stitching details
  • Avoid shadows, use natural lighting when possible

Plants and Veggies

FLOWERS:

Good:

  • Blooms should be photographed on a straight angle
  • Close proximity, details visible
  • Plain (white) background
  • Overall photos (whole arrangement)
  • Good lighting (no shadowing that could alter the flower colouration)

Bad:

  • Angle should not hide petals and shape
  • Avoid using flash
  • Avoid dark backgrounds
  • Avoid taking the photo by a window

VEGETABLES:

  • Lighting and photo angle minimize shadowing in the picture
  • Plain white background allows for easy viewing of colour
  • Measurement shown beside entry, entries lined up together and ruler placed to measure length or width
  • Numbers on ruler need to be visible

 

Paper/2D classes

2-D / Paper Drawings

Good

  • Pencil drawings and writing on paper require good lighting to show up properly on white paper
  • Do not have excessively bright light causing overexposure and lightening the image or low lighting to darken the image

Bad

  • Low lighting causes darkening of the image and makes details difficult to see
  • Can tell if lighting is poor if white paper is discoloured

Paintings:

Good

  • Centered, “head-on” angle
  • No shadows
  • Covers majority of frame of view
  • We recommend picturing painting on an easel, easel should not be visible though
  • Close proximity allows details to be seen


Bad

  • Distracting background
  • Painting should take up more of frame of view. 

 

 

 

Writing:

Good:

  • Requires good lighting 
  • No excessive bright lights, causes the paper to be too bright to read
  • Dark enough writing to properly read the print 

Bad:

  • Avoid using flash
  • should be photographed straight on, no angles
  • Ink/pencil too light to see, writing needs to be heavier

Wearables

WEARABLES – JEWELRY

Good

  • Strong, bright lighting with minimal shadows
  • Item is main focus, takes up most of frame
  • Properly displayed to represent items purpose
  • Identifying features cropped out

Bad

  • Low light and harsh shadowing
  • Item is difficult to see because only occupies small portion of frame
  • Not photographed “head on”
  • Not displayed on mannequin or person to represent items purpose

CLOTHING – MENS, WOMENS, CHILDREN/INFANT

Good

  • Bright, even lighting allows garnet and details to be seen without distortion
  • Require front, back, inside and stitching / detail pictures
  • May be displayed on mannequin for better picturing
