Live! with a Field Crop Farmer
Meet the Farmer!
Oak View Farms – Alan Mulock & Family
My name is Alan Mulock and I grow field crops for a living! I farm near Oakwood, Ontario and I have lived on a farm my whole life. My father also grew field crops for a living, and was one of the first farmers our area to grow soybeans. I attended Ridgetown College of Agricultural Technology and graduated in 1995 with a diploma in Agriculture Business and Production.
I have been married to my wife Deb for 23 years and we have 3 children. Austin, who is 20, Faith who is 19 and Colby who is 15. Austin graduated from college this year with a diploma in Agriculture Business and Production and he now works with us on the farm. Faith works off the farm preparing to go to university and Colby helps out on the farm in his spare time after school.
After College I began to acquire land of my own to grow field crops off the family farm. I continued to work with my father until his health declined in the mid 2000’s and in 2008 my wife and I purchased the family farm now known as Oakview Farms.
We grow a variety of field crops including Food Grade and Non-GMO soybeans, Food Grade Specialty beans like White beans and Azuki beans, winter wheat, grain corn, and sweet corn. In the 1990’s we began growing more cover crops such as red clover, that grew up after the winter wheat was harvested, we continue this practice today but have introduced a multi-species cover crop.
Our goal is to explore ways to be efficient and to conserve the soil and natural resources.
We are a 4-H farm family and my wife Deb is a Farm Safety Club leader and we host an annual Farm Safety Tour through our farm where we go over some shop safety and large equipment safety. This is always a fun and educational time, giving the kids a chance to be up close to the large farm equipment.
